Buying a Used Fridge with a Dispenser: Plumbed or Non-Plumbed?

Plumbed or Non-Plumbed Dispenser Fridge

A glass of cold water from the fridge door looks convenient. Then you notice a detail in the listing: the dispenser needs a water connection.

Before buying a used fridge with a dispenser, find out how it receives water. A plumbed model connects to a suitable water supply. A non-plumbed model uses a tank that you refill.

Neither choice suits every home. Your kitchen layout, daily routine and the actual machine’s condition matter more than the dispenser’s appearance.

Do not identify the system from the door alone

Similar-looking refrigerators can have different water arrangements. Ask for the full model number, then check the manufacturer’s specifications.

For example, Samsung Gulf describes the RS64R5331B4/AE as using a tank for its non-plumbing ice and water dispenser. Other models require a connection to a water supply.

This is a manufacturer example, not a claim that this model is currently in our stock.

Also distinguish water dispensing from ice making. A water dispenser does not automatically mean the refrigerator makes ice, and ice arrangements vary by model.

A plumbed model can suit a kitchen with an appropriate connection. A tank-fed model can be convenient where adding a supply is impractical.

However, a refillable tank adds another household task. Consider who will fill it and whether it is easy for them to handle.

Check your kitchen before reserving the fridge

For a plumbed refrigerator, ask an installer to assess the intended location. Explain where the nearest suitable water supply is and how the appliance will sit.

Confirm the model’s supply requirements and the proposed connection route. Include fittings and installation labour when requesting the total quote.

Samsung Gulf’s water-line guidance explains why the supply, connections and leak checks matter. Have the installer follow the exact model’s instructions rather than applying a generic specification.

If you rent, check permission before altering plumbing or cabinetry. A tank-fed model may avoid a new water connection, but it still needs suitable space and electrical installation.

Think about future access too. Filters, valves and service points should not become an afterthought once the fridge is positioned.

Ask to see three functions separately

“The fridge is working” can mean the interior feels cold. That statement does not establish whether its dispenser and ice maker work.

Ask the seller to separate the demonstration into cooling, water dispensing and ice production, where fitted.

1. Cooling

Request evidence that both refrigerator and freezer compartments are operating properly. Discuss any previous cooling fault or repair.

For broader checks, use our used refrigerator buying guide. Treat dispenser checks as an additional step.

2. Water dispensing

Ask for a demonstration from the actual unit. For a tank-fed system, check that the correct tank and its fittings are present.

For a plumbed system, establish whether it was tested with a suitable water connection. A disconnected showroom unit may need a separate demonstration.

Look for visible leakage around accessible components. Ask the seller to explain irregular flow or repeated dripping rather than guessing the cause yourself.

3. Ice production and delivery

A bin containing ice does not establish that the machine produced it. Ask whether the ice maker completed its normal production process.

If the door offers cubed or crushed ice, ask which functions were tested. Confirm that the correct bin and other required parts are included.

The necessary waiting time depends on the model and conditions. A brief visit may not demonstrate a complete ice-making cycle, so request clear evidence or agree how testing will be completed.

Inspect the parts you will use and maintain

With a refillable system, ask to see how the tank is removed and refitted, if the manual permits removal. Check for cracks, a missing lid or damaged fittings.

Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Do not assume every component can go into a dishwasher or tolerate the same cleaning product.

If a filter is fitted, establish its exact reference and service history. Ask about replacement availability before buying an older model.

Do not treat a lit filter indicator as a complete maintenance record. Request whatever documentation exists and plan future care around the manual.

If a part is missing, get a confirmed replacement route and cost. “You can find one online” is not a completed check.

What if you do not plan to use the dispenser?

You may like the refrigerator’s layout but have no need for water or ice. Ask the manufacturer or installer whether that model can operate as intended with those functions disabled.

Also establish whether an existing dispenser fault affects anything else. Do not assume it is isolated just because the fridge currently feels cold.

Compare the offer with a suitable refrigerator without a dispenser. You may prefer simpler everyday use over a feature you expect to leave switched off.

Choose around your routine

Imagine a rented apartment without a practical water connection near the fridge. A refillable model may be easier to accommodate, provided filling the tank is manageable.

Now imagine a kitchen already prepared for a compatible plumbed unit. A connected dispenser could remove the need for frequent refilling.

These are planning examples, not promises about installation cost. Both still require a working used appliance and a suitable kitchen space.

Questions to send before ordering

Ask the seller:

  • What is the exact model number?
  • Is the dispenser plumbed or tank-fed?
  • Does this unit dispense water, make ice, or both?
  • Which functions were tested, and how?
  • Are all tanks, bins, filters and required fittings included?
  • What installation work is included in the quote?
  • What support applies if a demonstrated function fails after delivery?

Browse our used refrigerator listings and request details for the unit you prefer. Share your kitchen setup when enquiring so the dispenser arrangement can be checked before delivery.
